Eddie Murphy has announced on TODAY that he’ll don the trench coat and magnifying glass as the new Inspector Clouseau in an upcoming Pink Panther reboot. In the same chat with Al Roker, he teased other projects on deck—playing funk legend George Clinton, jumping back into Shrek 5 and, yes, leading the classic bumbling detective franchise.
Murphy winked that his Clouseau “has to be French, but he could also be Haitian… he’s Black, for sure,” putting his own spin on the role first made famous by Peter Sellers and later revived by Steve Martin. At 64, the comedy icon says he’s shifted from wise-cracking upstart to “the old voice of reason”—and admits action scenes take a bit more out of him these days.
