Glenn Howerton admits he nearly walked away from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia as Season 12 kicked off, worried the gang had “peaked” and itching to stretch into other projects (hello, A.P. Bio). He felt boxed in and even pitched ending the show early—only to be gently vetoed by co-creators Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson and Charlie Day.

Howerton did bow out of the writing team for Seasons 13–14 and sent Dennis off to North Dakota, but Sunny’s “gravity” pulled him back in. After A.P. Bio wrapped its four-season run, he dove right back into Sunny’s chaos—and the series shows no signs of stopping, with Season 17 dropping July 9 and Season 18 already in the works.
