Glenn Howerton on why he wanted to quit 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia': "I was worried that we had sort of peaked"

Why Glenn Howerton wanted to quit 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia'

As the longest-running live-action sitcom in TV history heads into its 18th season, star Glenn Howerton shares why he almost quit after season 11.

Glenn Howerton admits that as Always Sunny was hitting its stride around season 12, he started to worry the gang had “peaked” and he felt creatively boxed in. During a recent 20th-anniversary panel, he confessed he was itching to branch out, even suggesting the show should end—only to have co-creators (and Danny DeVito) refuse to let him walk away.

He briefly stepped back from the writing team in seasons 13–14 (and chased NBC’s A.P. Bio gig), yet the pull of Sunny was too strong. After a stint off, he jumped back in—opinions and all—and the Paddy’s Pub crew isn’t slowing down: season 17 drops July 9, with season 18 already brewing.
