HBO Max has officially ditched the Max name and gone back to being HBO Max today. The switch is already live across the streamer’s website and apps—max.com now redirects to hbomax.com, and both the Apple and Google Play stores show the old-but-new branding. There’s no separate download required; your existing Max app will auto-update with the HBO Max name.
Originally launched in 2020 to unify HBO’s streaming lineup, the 2023 rebrand to Max was met with widespread criticism (think New Coke vibes). At the same time, Warner Bros. Discovery is re-splitting into two companies: one housing HBO and its studios, the other overseeing CNN, Discovery Plus and the rest.
