TL;DR
We’re drowning in TV that’s so obsessed with wealth, it’s become its own genre. From Mountainhead to The White Lotus, even shows that started as sharp satires have devolved into endless peeks at glossy homes, designer lamps and impossibly stylish wardrobes—often with zero plot reason for all that money except “it looks nice on screen.”
Sure, when a series like Succession or Schitt’s Creek uses wealth to make a point, it works. But once producers lean into gratuitous “Selling Sunset-ification” (i.e. characters only get richer so viewers have something to covet), it stops being fun or aspirational and just becomes… boring. Instead of inspiring envy, we’re left wondering how little these characters understand about real life (and whether there’s a Temu dupe for their floor lamps).
