Seth Green just revealed that Adult Swim’s 20th-anniversary Robot Chicken special (dropping this weekend) was born from a simple bit of corporate pragmatism: after Discovery bought Warner Bros., “no one was green-lighting a new season of 20 quarter-hours—everyone who would’ve said yes got fired.” So instead of waiting on full-season approval, Green and co. ripped off South Park’s playbook and went the one-off special route.

They’ve already shown it works—Robot Chicken’s Star Wars specials are legendary—so why not stick with standalone half-hours? According to Green, it keeps the show “economically viable,” keeps fans happy and means more Chicken on screen without wrangling a full-season greenlight.
