Michael Madsen, the gravel-voiced character actor best known for playing Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs and Budd in Kill Bill: Vol. 2, has died at 67 of cardiac arrest, his manager confirmed. Over a 40-year career he racked up dozens of credits—everything from The Doors, Thelma & Louise and Donnie Brasco to Tarantino ensemble outings like The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His psychotic ear-cutting scene in Reservoir Dogs is still a touchstone of ’90s indie cinema, and he nearly snagged a lead role in Pulp Fiction before dropping out for Wyatt Earp.
Born in Chicago in 1957 to a firefighter dad and filmmaker mom (and big-sister to Oscar-nominated Virginia Madsen), Mike cut his teeth at Steppenwolf Theatre under John Malkovich before popping up in WarGames and The Natural. He also lent his voice to hit video games like Grand Theft Auto III and Dishonored, and even published poetry and photography. He’s survived by his wife, DeAnna Morgan, and four children (one son, Hudson, predeceased him in 2022).
