Sean Astin, best known as Samwise from The Lord of the Rings, is throwing his hat in the ring for SAG-AFTRA president, aiming to replace Fran Drescher at the helm of the 160,000-member union. He’s assembled a star-studded ticket: Michelle Hurd as secretary-treasurer, Joely Fisher to lead the LA Local Board, Lisa Ann Walter as first vice president, and David Jolliffe returning as second vice president.
If voters back him, Astin would follow the same trail blazed by his mom, Oscar-winner Patty Duke, who made history as only the second woman to lead the then-Screen Actors Guild back in the mid-’80s.
